Chapter 23
Hana woke, hearing the bell for the first lesson ringing in the distance. The house sounded silent apart from Phoenix, who lay on her back in the double bed and struggled to pull the sleep suit over her feet. She had lost one leg already and the empty material hung sideways. As Hana rubbed the sleep from her eyes, Phoenix turned towards her and made delicate âpah, pahâ noises before opening her mouth in a happy grin. Hana laughed, her eyes crinkling with love.
âFor such a little person, that is a very big smell!â she exclaimed after changing her daughterâs nappy. She pushed the window open on its security latch and waved fresh air into the room. âPooh, stinky! Youâre Mrs Bugle-bum for sure.â
Contentment shrouded her and Hana felt reluctant to let it dissipate so soon. She sat in bed, feeding the baby and enjoying the luxury of reading a novel she wanted to finish. Phoenix fed and fell asleep, her little tummy rising like a hillock. Hana studied her with pride, knowing any growth was entirely through her efforts. âMaybe Iâm not as rubbish as I thought,â she whispered to the sleeping child. Wrapping her up, she laid her in the cot and then wandered to the kitchen for a drink.
Tama sprawled on the floor in his sleeping bag. Heâd propped himself up against the front of the sofa with pillows behind him, watching cartoons. Hana picked her way past, realising her mistake as he reached out and caught hold of her leg. She wore a shirt of Loganâs with knickers underneath but the ensemble showed off her slender legs. Tama winked at her and pulled the sleeping bag back with his other hand. âFancy coming in for a cuddle?â he asked, his tone sultry.
Hana kicked out, detaching his grasp. âDonât even think about it!â she replied, her voice rising in horror. âIâm old enough to be your mother!â
Tama grinned. âYou donât hear me complaining.â
Hana paused, containing her indignation and playing a longer game. âOkay then,â she replied. âIâll ring Logan and make sure he doesnât mind.â
âNo! Hana donât!â The lascivious smile slipped from Tamaâs face and his voice rose an octave. âPlease donât. Iâm sorry! Heâll kill me!â
âBe quiet!â Hana snapped. âI just put Phoenix in her cot.â
Tama wriggled from his sleeping bag and stood up in his boxer shorts. The flush had drained from his cheeks. He wrung his hands, knowing heâd gone too far. âI get horny,â he whispered. âWomen rarely turn me down.â
Hana flicked the kettle on to boil and left the room, cursing her stupidity in wandering around half dressed. Tama was a mixed up, randy teenager, whose skewed moral compass was influenced by his bizarre upbringing. Logan had tried to warn her and she regretted dismissing his carefully given advice. Tama spoke the truth. If she breathed a word of his lewd suggestion to her husband, heâd dismember his nephew and bury his body under the rugby pitch.
Hana showered and dressed before returning to the kitchen.
